Ryuu’s comfortable in most clothes. He doesn’t go out of his way to get dressed up, but most of the time he’ll wear a plain t-shirt and a pair of distressed jeans(pretty much the story of his life). He doesn’t fuss much about labels and will be just as happy wearing a jacket from a supermarket as one from a designer store. He always wears battered old shoes, and his favourite pair used to be white with black stripes (but they’re so dirty you can’t really tell what colour they are). He’s never seen without his beanie hat. He often wears large sunglasses outside, and he hates clothes that are close around the neck and scarves. When riding or instructing he wears a fluorescent green pair of jodhpurs and an old white t-shirt. Most of Ryuu’s clothes have got cigarette burns somewhere on them.
He is a broad shouldered guy with well muscled arms and back, and the early beginnings of a beer belly. His eyes are a bright green, and he has long, messy, greasy shoulder length hair. Ryuu’s very lazy about his personal appearance, and goes about a week before he bothers to shave. Because of this, he normally has a stubbly five o’clock shadow. If Ryuu’s had a haircut, you’ll definitely know about it because he’ll complain for at least two weeks about how short it is. Ryuu’s skin is pretty thick, scarred all over from various misadventures and nightclub fights. His favourite scar is a puncture wound where he drove an electric screw driver through his hand.
, and this is my mind it goes !
over and over the same old lines
Ryuu is a total loud mouth, and has a pretty big ego for his head. He’s overly confident in his people skills, and is a total socialite. No one has ever seen Ryuu on his own at the weekend; he’s always going out with friends and doing stuff - most likely drinking - and hates to have lazy, quiet days. The only time he doesn’t mind being alone is when he’s playing his drums. But he regards them as his friend, so that doesn’t count. He seems to have this deep fear of being alone, and will try almost anything to convince you to spend an evening with him.
Although it might not be obvious at first, Ryuu suffers from bipolar disorder. Some days he’ll be insanely happy, hyper and spontaneous but then other days he’ll be sullen and depressive. He can easily change moods without being provoked, and because of his unpredictable mood swings it’s very hard to get close to him without him inadvertently hurting your feelings. He tries hard though, and hates how he sometimes treats people differently without reason or meaning to
If you mess with Ryuu’s friends, you mess with him big time. Don’t be surprised if he seeks you out to give you a good punch for upsetting his friends. He is incredibly loyal to his friends; don’t expect him to get two faced on you. He’ll stick by your side no matter what, and will help you when you’re in a spot of bother. That is, unless you’re disloyal to him, or you piss him off big time. Ryuu can turn the cold shoulder on you in a heartbeat, and is very stubborn about accepting apologies. Ryuu is a big, cuddly teddy bear most of the time, and is great to go to if you need a hug or you’re feeling down. Don’t count on him giving you very good advice though; he’s about as useful as an empty roll of cardboard when it comes to that. But he tries hard, and you have to give him credit for that, right? Regardless, he’ll go out of his way to turn that frown, upside down.
Ryuu’s incredibly stubborn, and always has to get what he wants. He just does. Not. Give. Up. He is a prideful sod, and giving up hurts his ego badly. He’s a stubborn little bastard, and he always tries to get his own way. He’s not easily swayed, and gets angry if you try to convince him to do something he doesn’t want to. In an argument, Ryuu stands his ground fiercely, and doesn’t back down, even if it’s obvious that the argument’s lost.
He is a hilarious, playful person most of the time. However, he hates having his past dug up. Even though his mother died when he was only four, it still hurts him. More recently, he got a girl pregnant and he gets very defensive when people criticise him for it. He was young and foolish, and he’s grown up an awful lot since. He especially hates it when people think they know him, when they really don’t.
He’s not particularly short tempered, and he doesn’t easily get angry compared to some. But you really don’t want to get on his bad side because he doesn’t hold back with cutting remarks - or his fist. If he’s pissed off with you, he goes all the way and his scathing tongue can be very hurtful. He doesn’t hold grudges, however, but he doesn’t ever say sorry unless he seriously means it, which is rarely. Preferring to just wait till the heat of the argument is over, then going right back to normal, some people shun him for being so blasé about getting over things. If whoever he’s fallen out with doesn’t want to know anymore, he will just forget about them and move on.
Unashamed of his sexuality, Ryuu is gay and he makes it known. If you’re a guy, just about okay to look at and you’re within a mile radius of Ryuu, he’ll be having a go at you like a kid at a candy stick. He’s not one for ‘true love’ and ‘soul mates’. He isn’t very keen on having boyfriends either, because he gets board easily. Quite frankly, he doesn’t believe there’s such a thing. We were put on this Earth for one reason, and one reason only - to drop our pants. If he wants someone, he won’t stop till he at least gets a snog. He doesn’t take no for an answer, and it takes a lot to dissuade him from his goal.
Ryuu’s very addictive, and can get hooked on things easily. Ryuu is a smoker, and smokes almost non-stop. He takes drugs an awful lot in an attempt to self medicate his bipolar disorder. Ryuu is also scarily dependant on alcohol. When he’s been without alcohol for a while, he can be a bit grumpy. The same goes for if he’s run out of cigarettes. Heaven forbid he’s out of cigarettes and alcohol free. Even though he’s a pretty seasoned drinker, he hates hangovers with a passion, and behaves like a bear woken from hibernation with a bad headache the morning after a night out.
Ryuu is very scatter brained. He tends to get lazy about things, and by the time he’s found motivation, he forgets. He needs prodding in the right direction when he looses track of what he was doing and he gets distracted easily. He tends to bounce from one thing to the other, getting bored with things easily and buggering off to do something that looks more interesting. But in the long run, the thing he was doing before was way more useful than whatever he dumped it for. He does this a lot with relationships, and he often kicks himself for it.
Most people love to be around him, with his infectious self confidence, springy step and broad, almost permanent grin. Some people find his stubbornness, big ego and sometimes vulgar sense of humour to be very irritating though. Ryuu’s one of those guys that you either love, or you hate.

HISTORY:
[/ul]
Stephen was born in Los Angeles. He had the average family of a Mum, Dad, two kids and a dog (called Fluffy). Stephen’s father was a small time politician, and his mother was a stay at home wife. They had an average life, with an average sized house, a small pool and the average childhood pleasantries like a TV, and weekly pocket money. His parents - Michael and Lily - were nice parents, not necessarily good ones, but nice anyway. Stephen’s brother, Edward (affectionately called Ed) was almost five years older than Stephen and they had little in common.
At the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950, Katherine’s mother and her family fled from South Korea and came to America. The family settled in California, but the young girl wanted more. She found an American husband who was staying in California on business, and he took her back to Brooklyn. A few years later, Katherine Hall was born. Katherine had two siblings - younger sister May and older sister Danielle. May and Katherine were very close, as there was not much of an age gap, but Danielle was much older and she didn’t pay much attention to her younger siblings.
Katherine and Stephen went all through school together, and it was clear from an early age that they would become lovers. By the time they reached Sophomore year, they were an item, and at the tender ages of 20 and 18 got married. Katherine, right out of high school, didn’t have much in her future in the way of a career, but two years into the marriage, the couple were offered a flourishing stud farm by Katherine’s cousin who lived in Dijon, France. Katherine was a horse fanatic, and persuaded Stephen that it would be a good idea. So the couple moved into the large house that accompanied the farm, and Stephen went to a collage near Dijon specialising in running farms. Katherine studied to become a riding instructor, and when the cousin believed the two were competent, handed over the farm to Stephen’s now capable hands.
Together, with Katherine’s infectious enthusiasm, and Stephen’s natural business skills, they built up a considerable fortune. Although they married at a very early age, Katherine decided she wanted to leave having children until a bit later in life, because she was so content with her life in Dijon. They learnt the language vigilantly - for it was essential for their work - and soon Katherine had many friends. Stephen, although just as competent at the language as his wife, did not make so many friends as even in his early adulthood he was a very reclusive man.
When Katherine was 28, and Stephen 30, they conceived their first child. Much to their surprise, however, it was reviled to them that they were in fact expecting twins. Katherine continued to teach riding right up until seven months into her pregnancy, and waited out the rest of her gestation by book keeping - someone had to keep a count of all the money they had.
On the 16th of November 1987, at 5:38pm, Katherine James gave birth to two healthy boys. The couple thought long and hard about names - they wanted them to be original, and not like each other - and eventually came to the decision of Irja and Ryuu. The two babies probably changed names a couple of times, but eventually Katherine decided to give each one a bracelet to identify which was which (although, as the two got older, they had great fun in tricking people into thinking one was the other).
Katherine became very motherly, and her time working decreased dramatically as she put more time into caring for the house and their two rambunctious children. It was clear from an early age that Ryuu was the more dominant, outgoing child, and Irja was the thoughtful, quieter one.
The family lived a happy, quiet life, and when the twins were nearly four years old, Katherine announced her second pregnancy. Stephen was overjoyed, and they awaited their third child eagerly. However, something went horribly wrong. Severe complications during birth caused Katherine to die of internal bleeding and haemorrhaging only a few hours after the birth of their third son, Kailie.
The death of their mother affected the twins in vastly different ways. Irja’s confidence was knocked even further, and he became much quieter and more reclusive than before. Ryuu, on the other hand, became aggressive, and took out his anger and grief on Kailie often.
The loss of his wife caused Stephen to become warped with grief. He was distant and found caring for the children on his own difficult, so hired a young maid, Mary, to help out around the house. Around the same time, he hired a new riding instructor. She was called Sarah Antoinette. Sarah had a daughter, named Claire, who was the same age as Ryuu and Irja and they would play together often. As the boys got older, they became very close to Claire, and the three were rarely seen apart.
From Ryuu’s eighth birthday, Stephen became obsessed with training his ‘oldest’ son to be the next heir of the stud farm. Ryuu’s opposition to this idea, and his strong rebellious tendencies began his downward spiral. He and his father would get in horrific fights often, and Stephen threatened to send Ryuu away to boarding school many times. Although Ryuu never really got on with his father, all three of the James boys got spoilt rotten, and he got his first drum kit for his eighth birthday.
At around this time, Stephen re-married. Ryuu was unimpressed by their ‘new mama’ and did everything he could to wind her up. Irja, on the other hand, thought this was a blessing and became quite close to Amie. Only a year later, Amie had a daughter called Olivia. Ryuu and Irja were miffed at this, and Ryuu especially felt that his father was trying to replace his mother. This made him angry, and he would often treat Olivia in a similar way to Kailie. He’d kind of grown out of being horrible to Kailie, but still enjoyed tormenting him like all brothers do. A year later, Amie had a second daughter which they named Harriett.
When the twins first went to senior school - at the age of twelve - they began to realise they were different from most other boys. Irja began to have irrational feelings for 14 year old Fly Kahn. Irja was bemused by this, and hid away his gayness. Ryuu, on the other hand, revelled in his difference, and made as much of a show about it as he could. If anyone tried to push him around for it, boy would they learn they didn’t mess with Ryuu. He was a strong boy, even from a young age, and he could hold his own. He and Irja weren’t exactly best friends, but Ryuu stuck up for his shyer ‘younger’ brother because deep down he cared for his twin.
By fourteen, Ryuu was one of the most popular guys in the class, and Irja the least. The two brothers were so different, the only way you’d know they were related was the way they would bicker in the halls and the fact that they’re identical. It was now, two years after he’d first set his sights on Irja, that Fly made his move. The flamboyantly gay youngster snapped Irja up, and treated him well. Ryuu, though, took an immediate dislike to Fly, and often made it known. This was the beginning of the wedge that began to drive itself into the twin’s relationship.
Ryuu, who was already in with the popular crowd, was introduced to drugs just before his fifteenth birthday. Ryuu was excited by it, and gladly accepted the forbidden substances. This secured Ryuu’s place as most popular dude in the class. Although not particularly attracted to girls, he revelled in the attention they gave him, and he took up smoking because he thought it looked sexy. He quickly became addicted to cocaine and nicotine, and he was oblivious to the fact he was beginning to become an underachiever. He’d never been the brightest spark, but he just about managed. But as he delved further into addiction, he started missing more and more school, and putting his education in jeopardy.
At fifteen years old, after two quickly successive attempts on his life, Ryuu was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He was angry with his father for never telling him that the condition ran in the family (his uncle Ed, who lived in America but visited often, suffered from it when he was younger but went on a course of therapy which all but removed it). But this didn’t seem to affect his life too much, other than the fact that he sunk further into addiction to drugs, alcohol and sex in a kind of self medication.
By the time Ryuu and Irja turned sixteen, Ryuu had become a chronic alcoholic, cocaine snorter and smoked a packet of cigarettes a day. Irja had just become aware of Ryuu’s problems, but it wasn’t until Ryuu started going out with his friends and getting involved in petty crime and knives that Irja realised that Ryuu was putting other people - and himself - at serious risk.
All of Claire’s life, she’d been in love with Irja, but when Irja inadvertently broke her heart - by accidentally letting slip about his hidden boyfriend, Fly - and she ran to Ryuu to get revenge. Ryuu didn’t pass up the chance of a few quick fucks even though he wasn’t necessarily into girls, but being the idiot he is, he got her pregnant.
Suddenly confronted with commitment, Ryuu panicked and tried to get away from it. It wasn’t till after a year of trying to resist his responsibilities that Ryuu ran away. Struggling to keep his friendships together, fighting his addictions and terrified of the police, he fled south to stay with a friend in the Alps. Of course, due to his insane un-inventiveness, Irja knew exactly where his twin had run to and he was quickly retrieved about a month later, after they’d given Ryuu some time to calm down.
After spectacularly flunking school, Ryuu took up hiding in his room and smoking pot, and generally being very anti-social. He lost a lot of friends, but didn’t delete the dial-a-fucks from his phonebook. He refused to get a job and avoided all family get-togethers at all costs. Although he didn’t get a job to earn money, he worked around his dad’s yard as a stable hand for want of something to do.
When Ryuu turned nineteen, he finally reached the end of his tether. He was sick of being cooped up in his father’s home, being constantly pestered by his brothers and endlessly being asked to go see his son Louis. Packing a rucksack with some underwear, drugs and his mobile phone, Ryuu left for the Alps once more. He took a job as a snowboarding instructor, and spent his weekends and the off season getting wasted in Paris. While in Paris he found an unlikely friend in a French/American male prostitute, Hervé. Although Ryuu will probably deny that he paid Hervé for sex till the day he dies, Hervé actually offered a rather large friend-only discount.
Ryuu was content for the first time in a very long time. He spent his life bouncing between Paris and the French Alps, working the nightclub scene during the summer and working the snow-capped slopes in the winter. When he met Abel, the stability and predictability of his life was shaken once more. The fiery Parisian man was flamboyant, articulate and destructive; everything Ryuu wished he could be but always ended up a mess. He tore into Ryuu and his life like a whirlwind with claws. The relationship was abusive and physically violent, and Ryuu always found himself promising he’d never go back but found himself crawling back to Paris every Friday night without a second thought.
When he turned twenty three, he finally decided enough was enough. He got in touch with his Uncle Ed, who he assumed still lived in California. Ryuu was sick of France and everything that it meant to him. It turned out that Ed had moved to Lexington, Kentucky, after a nearly fatal heart attack that pushed him to end his career in a successful band known as ‘The Manic Truth Theory’. Pushed by his friend Hervé, who had become increasingly concerned for Ryuu’s well being, Ryuu moved to America to live with his Uncle in Kentucky.
He saw this move to America as a chance to start a fresh. He admitted himself to rehab, and successfully became cocaine free. Although the alcohol and the smoking was still his main security blankets. Finding work had been Ryuu’s initial concern but he stumbled across an ad in the local news paper for a place as a riding instructor at Elmendorf Equestrian Academy. Having experience in both instructing people in sports and almost twenty years of experience with horses, Ryuu was perfect for the job and he was accepted without second thought to his shady background. Ryuu’s now been working at the academy for five years and he’s practically part of the furniture.
